The TRUE STORY OF U.F.O.
(UNLIMITED FREIGHTING OBJECTS®)
In 1977, John Hughes and Gary B. built a skate car for a race in Ohio. We named it U.F.O. After returning to California we decided to come out with our own skateboard wheel brand and had to come up with a name. Unlimited Freighting Objects ® was the real name that was trademarked in 1977. U.F.O. were the initials. As with many partnerships, things did not work out. John sold out and moved on raising his two daughters. In 1989, while surfing at Cardiff Reef, California, John was trying to start it up again - Again with partners. This time the name was UFO Sports Inc.. Again the partners did not see things the same and John sold out again. In the year 2000, John started to look into a third try. UFO’s trademark was dead as of 1999 so it seemed like a go. Half way though in the year 2000, John found someone had redone the UFO trademark for skateboard wheels; Not the original name but the UFO.
John and his son Milo decided on WHAT ® and the original name of Unlimited Freighting Objects® both are Registered Trademark’s and we have worked very hard to bring these two names into the sport. Our 56 mm What® wheels have been climbing the market little by little, and Unlimited Freighting Objects® IS the Company name and the trademark for our old school wheels. So if you hear something different, just get the history book out, (ie:) Skateboarder Mag 1977-78 and the skateboard review and look it up. Everyone has their own story, some true and some not true. Every thing here can be checked with just a little work. Facts are facts and truth is truth, so beware of the person who plays on someone else’s history. Once a SKATEBOARDER, ALWAYS A SKATEBOARDER.
RESPECTFULLY, JOHN HUGHES
